Why Do I Need A Will?

If you don’t have a Will when you die, your money, property and possessions will be shared out according to the law instead of your wishes. This can mean they pass to someone you hadn’t intended.

If you aren’t married and don’t have a Will, your partner, regardless of how long you have been together or if you have children, will not inherit anything.

There are many different reasons for writing a Will. It allows you to appoint guardians to look after your young children; choose who you want to be your Executors and Trustees; give specific instructions about your funeral; specify whether you want to donate your organs, or donate your body for medical research and outline what happens to your pets

Who Should I choose as Executors?

An Executor is the individual or persons named in your Will who will be responsible for all aspects of handling your affairs after your death.
This includes telling people and other parties that you have passed away, arranging your funeral, collating details about your estate, and any other financial and personal factors.

An Executor can be your spouse, your partner, any of your children (providing they are over 18 at the time of your death), your sibling or a close friend.
An Executor’s duties can be extremely time-consuming, so we recommend that you first ask the person or persons you wish to appoint whether they are willing to act.
As a result, when Executors are called upon to act, they will often appoint a professional firm to help, and any costs and expenses incurred by Executors – including the professional firm’s fees – can be recouped from the estate.

Who Should I choose as Guardians?
Should something happen to you, a Will is the only legal document that allows you to state clearly who should be appointed as guardians for your child or children.

Failure to specify a guardian means that the court will appoint one – and it may not be the person or persons who you think are best to look after them.
Until a guardian is assigned, your child / children could be put into the care of Social Services.

How Often Should I Review My Will?

We recommend that you review your Will every two years to make sure it still says what you want it to.
Any change in your personal circumstances should prompt a review of your Will.

This includes if you have recently got married, you are getting divorced or separated, you are having a child or a grandchild or you are buying a property.

Where Should I Store My Will?

Ask our Will Writers about our secure Will storage facility… ensuring that your original Will always remains safe and accessible when the time comes for it to be needed.
